Coming Home
Lydia came home from the hospital on Saturday, 6/30/07. We bought a "going-home" outfit for her the day we found out we were having a girl. Projected to be about 8 to 8-1/2 pounds at birth, Lydia was on target at 8 pounds and 6 ounces; as such, we were concerned that the newborn size we bought would not fit her. Of course, Lydia was swimming in her homecoming dress - and was more than ready to get out of it by the time we arrived home, especially after spending the first two days out of the womb in only a diaper and swaddling blankets. We have found that she generally does not like to have her clothes changed and actually prefers to wait and pee until we have her diaper off!
"I Fried Her!"
Lydia was slightly jaundiced when we left the hospital - something her doctor told us to keep an eye on over the weekend. A well-meaning nurse advised us to take her outside in just her diaper for 10 minute sessions of "sun therapy" a couple times of day until the jaundice disappeared. Pappy Vic was appointed the task of supervising Lydia's first sun-bathing session after we arrived home...on a 95 degree day. She spent about six minutes on her back and about four minutes on her front, after which Pappy Vic brought her inside. After a moment inside, Mamie Karen very successfully woke Lydia up so that she could be fed, upon which she started to cry and turn very red. When Pappy Vic saw her red skin, he cried out in a heart-wrenching wail of despair, "I fried her! You made me fry her!" Her color soon returned to normal, but Pappy Vic was heartbroken at the prospect he had just lobsterfied his two-day-old granddaughter. Needless to say, he refused to participate in any more "sun therapy."
